Just like the president of Sevilla FC did, the sports director, Víctor Orta, took advantage of the press conference to introduce Joaquín Caparrós as the new coach of the first team to analyze the club’s situation at a sports level. To begin with, the leader explained the decision to change the coach: «In football, results matter, few survive at Sevilla FC after four consecutive defeats, we had to change course because insisting on the error is like making the same mistake twice. We have supported the coach at all times and now we will do the same with Caparrós.» Regarding this choice, Orta was firm: «I believe Joaquín has an in-depth knowledge of the squad, as we have discussed it extensively, and an experience and ability that have convinced us. I think he will help us win in this final sprint of seven games, starting with Alavés.»
Orta was questioned about the future, both Caparrós’ future on the bench and the next planning. «Now we just need to focus on Alavés, which is a crucial match to get out of this bad streak of four defeats. This squad has not reached its limit, I believe that with the new coach we can finish the season better than we are now, we still have time to reach the top-10. The team is evolving, when they believe in themselves more and string together a couple of results, they will gain confidence. There is a lot of work and commitment from the players to the club, they are suffering a lot,» said Orta, who continues to trust the established roadmap: «We work with enthusiasm and understanding the economic situation, we have made inexpensive signings that have performed well, like Vargas in January, and we will continue working in that model. We feel capable of bringing in low-cost players who perform, supporting the coaches, and backing the work of the youth academy.»
«We feel capable of continuing to sign low-cost players who perform»
As expected, there was a lot of self-criticism in the message from the sports director, although not without explaining why this squad can grow: «We have received many offers for players in the January market. We have done things well, but we have also made mistakes. I work with the objectives that the club set for me when we planned the season, and both the incoming and outgoing coaches highlight the level of the squad. I was tasked with rejuvenating it, reducing the budget, and improving last year’s results. We are doing it, although not as much in terms of results as we expected. We have been good for a long time, but we haven’t been able to get into the fight for Europe. In the grand scheme of things and acknowledging a lot of mistakes, like in the forward line, which has been a serious mistake, I believe that we have done things well to achieve those set goals.»
In this regard, regarding the forward line, he defended Akor Adams, a winter signing who has not been able to perform «due to two muscle injuries when he had never been injured before. Akor’s situation has been unfortunate, but we will study why these injuries have occurred, we have a lot of confidence in him.»
