The City Council of Seville, through the Urban Planning and Environment Management, has carried out – since May 2023 – the installation of 18,583 LED luminaires acting in all neighborhoods of the city, thus renewing more than 23% of the total public lighting park. These are high-efficiency and low-consumption luminaires that replace the previous low-efficiency and high-consumption discharge luminaires, achieving an average energy consumption savings of 67%. In addition, 40,972 meters of equipotential underground earth network have been installed in the public lighting networks to increase their electrical safety and adapt them to the new electrotechnical regulations.
Regarding this matter, Mayor Sanz has emphasized that «we continue working to renew the entire public lighting park of Seville, making a much more sustainable, safe, and efficient city.» The mayor has stated that «in this way, we show the commitment of the City Council of Seville to the environment. The implementation of LED luminaires in the city represents a technological advancement that, in turn, translates into significant energy savings and reduces carbon emissions.»
With this change, José Luis Sanz has pointed out that «the quality of lighting in our streets, monuments, public spaces, and parks is significantly improved, offering greater safety to residents.»
In addition to the renovation of luminaires in different neighborhoods of the city, the council has already completed the installation of fernandino and Santa Cruz type lanterns in the streets of the historic center. A total of 804 lanterns have been installed, replacing the luminaires and wall arms of sheet metal, more typical of roads, in a total of 68 streets. In this way, José Luis Sanz has indicated that «we improve the landscape quality in the streets of the historic center, seeking an aesthetic in the luminaires in line with the historical and heritage values of the various enclaves in the city center.»
«We continue to bet on a new city model that will improve the lives of the people of Seville and will have a positive impact both economically and environmentally,» added José Luis Sanz.
Following the provisions of the Regulation on Energy Efficiency in Exterior Lighting Installations and those of the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), the type of LEDs used in the new luminaires in the city of Seville has a warm color temperature of 3000 K. This is a lighting that accurately reproduces the color of objects in public spaces, improving visibility for drivers and pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents, therefore increasing road safety. At the 3000K color temperature, an optimal energy efficiency ratio is obtained, unlike with sodium vapor lamps – with a yellowish light – which do not have the ability to reproduce colors, resulting in a weakness in terms of road safety, in addition to having lower energy efficiency and performance.
Changes in the luminaire of bridges and monuments
The City Council has also proceeded to replace the obsolete monumental lighting installation of the Macarena Wall with a new one with LED projectors managed remotely with high energy efficiency and the ability to regulate the level of luminous flux and color change, reforming it to increase its safety and adapt it to the new electrotechnical regulations.
A new public lighting network has also been provided along the riverside promenade, the bike lane of Avenida Juan Pablo II, the children’s play areas in La Buhaira Park, and the gardens of Vega de Triana, illuminating paths and play areas for children and seniors.
On the other hand, the Juan Belmonte monument now has artistic lighting, and the artistic lighting installation of the Cristo de la Expiración and San Telmo bridges has been renewed, replacing all obsolete discharge projectors with low energy efficiency and high consumption with new LED projectors of high energy efficiency and low energy consumption. The council has also replaced the discharge lamps of the projectors that illuminate the Caños de Carmona with LED lamps.
