The Minister of Culture and Sports, Patricia del Pozo, has once again requested the Government of Spain to declare the centenary of the Generation of ’27 as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest (AEIP) to promote the participation of civil society in the cultural commemoration, through tax incentives for collaborating companies and institutions.
During her speech in the Andalusian Parliament, Patricia del Pozo announced that she has sent a letter to the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, urging him to push for the consideration of the Generation of ’27 centenary as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest (AEIP) for this literary celebration, as she believes this declaration should not depend on the approval of a General Budget Law by the central government for the current fiscal year.
Regarding this matter, Minister Del Pozo also explained that «the Andalusian Government has agreed to be part of the national commission for the commemoration, even though we were not invited to the official presentation at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid on June 11, when this land is crucial in the origin and development of the literary group of 1927.»
«It is incomprehensible that Andalusia was not invited, and that neither Cádiz, Huelva, nor Málaga were present, when, for example, the Generación del 27 Cultural Center in the coastal city of Málaga preserves, studies, and disseminates the legacy of authors like María Teresa León and Rafael Alberti, José María Hinojosa, Emilio Prados, or José Moreno Villa, among many others,» stated Patricia del Pozo in the Andalusian Parliament.
Furthermore, the Minister has revealed that journalist and writer Eva Díaz Pérez will lead the commemorative program of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which will start with an exhibition dedicated to the painter José Caballero, a reference in the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century and a personal friend of many members of the literary group. The exhibition will open its doors next November at the Museum of Huelva and will travel to other provinces.
In the words of the Minister of Culture, «the proposal will mean Andalusia’s reunion with José Caballero, whose figure will help us trace the cultural achievements of the so-called ‘Silver Age,’ showing us many of its protagonists up close and bringing us closer to an outstanding artistic career based on surrealism and, to a lesser extent, cubism.»
Furthermore, the philosophy of the celebration conceived by the Ministry of Culture will have two main themes. On the one hand, all arts will be integrated, as the Generation of ’27 transcended the literary phenomenon to become a multidisciplinary map: theater, music, visual arts, architecture, flamenco, dance, and even sports. Secondly, it will be articulated throughout the Andalusian territory, as activities will take place in all provinces, as each of them played a significant role.
