The Ministry of Culture and Sport, led by Patricia del Pozo, proposes a cultural summer with over two hundred activities in museums, archaeological sites, cultural enclaves, and libraries spread across the eight Andalusian provinces. These activities include flamenco and pop concerts, guided visits to exhibitions, theatrical tours of archaeological sites, flamenco shows at the Generalife, meetings with young writers, and workshops for the whole family on diverse topics such as Andalusian gastronomy or magic in ancient Greece.
These proposals take place during the summer months, especially in July and August. However, some activities can already be enjoyed in June in museums and sites throughout the community, such as the summer film series at the Center for Contemporary Creation of Andalusia (C3A) in Córdoba, which on the 26th presents a new film, ‘Cunningham’, about the legendary American choreographer.
The scheduled activities are aimed at all audiences and ages. For example, in Almería, there will be a workshop on twilight and night photography at the Alcazaba on Thursday, August 7, and Sunday, August 10, where participants can put into practice what they have learned. For older people, a gastronomic workshop focused on Andalusian gastronomic heritage is scheduled for July 2 at the Museum of Almería, which will also host guided tours, theatrical performances, and concerts ranging from flamenco to classical music during July and August.
The cultural suggestions continue at the Andalusian Center of Photography (CAF), where the exhibition ‘Here, by the Water’ by Rafael Trobat will open on June 27, and the dialogue series at this space will continue.
Visit by the Minister of Culture and Sport to the Museum of Cádiz (Archive).
The Museum of Cádiz offers workshops for children on July 8, focusing on making ‘Phoenician Stickers’ from museum pieces, and on July 15, exploring different techniques for portrait painting with the intriguing title ‘Filters when there were no filters’.
In Córdoba, the proposals at the Archaeological Ensemble of Medina Azahara stand out, where from June 21 to September 20, there will be nighttime visits and theatrical tours from July 11 to September 20, with two sessions each night. The site will also host concerts, such as the one on July 4 commemorating the seventh anniversary of its World Heritage declaration, and the performance by Enrike Solinís on August 7, one of Spain’s great interpreters of Baroque music.
The Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Córdoba offers workshops for children, including one on food and bread in prehistory on July 4, where they can make their own sweet and savory treats from grinding to baking, and another on making slings, a tool associated with Iberian traditions and mythology, on July 11. In addition to the film series, C3A is organizing the ‘Electrolunch’ electronic culture event this summer, along with two dance proposals and a program of workshops for the whole family during June and July.
Exploring some of the main archaeological sites in the province is the focus of an activity organized in Granada, where visitors can access guided tours of Fuente Nueva (III) in Orce, the argaric settlement of Cerro de la Encina in Monachil, the Roman villa of Las Gabias in the capital city, and the castle of Moclín, one of the best defensive fortresses from the Nasrid period.
What does the museum smell like?
Furthermore, the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Granada has organized activities around smells, allowing participants to identify the scents of the museum and objects from prehistory and Al-Andalus. For children of different ages, the Granada Museum of Fine Arts has prepared workshops in July to learn drawing techniques, create cutouts, dioramas, or make badges.
One of the highlights in the province is the series presented by the Ministry at the Alhambra under the title ‘Lorca and Granada in the Generalife Gardens’, featuring ‘Call me Lorca’ from August 1 to 16, a new show directed by choreographer and dancer Manuel Liñán, National Dance Award winner. The program for this series, managed by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions, also includes various recitals with acclaimed singers like Miguel Poveda and José Mercé, among others.
Archaeology, particularly Tartessos, is the focus of a children’s workshop at the Museum of Huelva related to the exhibition on the La Joya site, where kids will learn about the process a piece goes through from excavation to display. Additionally, the museum offers theatrical tours and an escape room game in July and August.
In Jaén, activities include a guided tour of the Oppidum, where visitors can enjoy the sunset at the archaeological site of Puente Tablas, as well as a workshop on magic in ancient times, exploring curiosities like the origins of magic wands in ancient Greece. At the Museum of Jaén, visitors can play anthropologist for a day in a workshop or impress their friends with newfound knowledge in another activity on Andalusian pastries.
Perseids from the Dolmens of Antequera
The Archaeological Ensemble of the Dolmens of Antequera in Málaga offers activities such as a workshop for children on prehistoric activities like hunting, role-playing games to discover the megalithic heritage, and a guided observation of the Perseids in August. The Museum of Málaga also hosts workshops on various topics such as performing arts in ancient Rome, along with concerts by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and guided tours on trade in Al-Andalus and the role of women in the museum’s collections.
In the province, the School of Young Writers will take place in Mollina, organized by the Andalusian Center of Letters (CAL), with participation from thirty young people aged 12 to 20 from different parts of Andalusia.
Finally, in the province of Seville, there are proposals involving archaeology, such as the nighttime visit on ‘Mythology and Death in Rome’ organized at the Archaeological Ensemble of Carmona, as well as a historical film series at the Roman Theater of Itálica from July 18 to August 16.
Activities for families include an escape room at the Museum of Arts and Customs of Seville and concerts at the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art (CAAC), featuring jazz performances in July and August, as well as pop and rock concerts in September with acts like Amaral and Loquillo.
The museum center also hosts a summer film series focusing on artistic creation, various children’s workshops, and eleven recreational activities under the ‘Owl Project’, starting on June 24 and continuing until September 5, with offerings ranging from art and nature to musical performances.
At the Cartuja Monastery, specifically at the headquarters of the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage, a theatrical nighttime visit is organized on June 26, as well as a specific event in the Lego Cloister in September.
All these activities are complemented by those held at the eight provincial libraries and the Library of Andalusia, hosting book club sessions and exhibitions, such as one dedicated to scientific books at the Cántico Group Library in Córdoba or another focusing on the career of the designer ‘El Creata’ at the Provincial Library of Jaén. Additionally, the activities continue in the network of public theaters in Andalusia.
Finally, the Barenboim-Said Foundation will offer various workshops and courses during the summer, along with concerts at the International Young Performers Festival in Baeza on July 15, and their participation with a quintet of students from the Orchestral Studies Academy at the International Piano Festival in La Roque d’Anthéron, France.
